Technology Maturity Evaluation

Every organization approaches technology in a different way. Many organizations start by acquiring technology and then they figure out what to do with it. After finding limitations to this scatter-shot approach, organizations often begin to formalize their approach in some way. A planning process that utilizes technology and the people who will use that technology in the most effective way may take years to develop.

At times, even the best plans may be ignored due to financial constraints or the lack of educated employees to help implement those plans. Formal plans and their level of implementation can indicate the technology maturity level of an organization.
Wordle: Technology Maturity Evaluation
To obtain a snap shot of a company’s current technology maturity, I used Technology Maturity Benchmarks identified by Peter H.R. Sibley and Chip KimballĀ  to evaluate the SS Company. Below is the completed document indicating how I rated SS in several key areas.

After using Sibley’s rubric to guide my initial evaluation, I summarized my findings in the document below.

AECT Standards

4.1 Project Management — After evaluating SS’s technology maturity level, I am better equipped to manage projects for this company. I know their technology strengths and weaknesses. Through my management process and use of technology, I will be able to help them take the next step toward technology maturity.

5.1 Problem Analysis — Looking at SS through the filter of the Technology Maturity Rubric allowed me to see the company and its resources in a different light. This filter helped me understand why some projects seem to get hung up in similar ways. It also helped me see the next steps needed to fix those problems.

5.3 Formative and Summative Evaluation — The Technology Maturity Rubric is an excellent tool for making a formative evaluation of a company or school. Using the information obtained through the evaluation of SS, I can help the company progress by setting technology maturity goals during the planning my next project. Once the project is complete, I can use the rubric again to perform a summative evaluation. This second evaluation will allow me to see if the objectives I set had been met.

5.4 Long Range Planning — Even though SS is limited financially, they can still begin to make long-range plans for improvement of their use of technology. I do not have direct effect on their long-range planning, but I can and will make suggestions. Also, by incorporating better use of technology in my projects, I can be a model. Through my example, the company may see the impact effective technology has and choose to make changes company-wide.
